Modern History Sourcebook: The Constitution of the Iroquois Confederacy

The Constitution of the Iroquois Confederacy is what the American Constitution was based on!

Many historians think that the Iroquois Confederacy began in the year 1142, in what is now known as Upper New York State.

If you  read the entire thing, you’ll see that there was a “lower house” of two tribes, an upper house of two tribes, and a fire council (Supreme Court) made up of one tribe.

See this:

All together there were five tribes – and each tribe had to appoint council members who would act as a part of making the laws and decisions.

Our own Constitution was literally BUILT upon something that the Indians developed five to six hundred years before we ever thought of it.
